Text Box: Biography

Steve and Kim Sterchi met and started raising pheasants in 1978 in New Castle California. Kin’s interest were in horses and they started raising miniature horses that same year. In 1984 they moved to their 50 acre horse ranch in Grass Valley California where their interest in pheasants and horses grew. They now have over 75 head of horses and raise about 30,000 ring neck pheasants a year. Steve loves birds but his passion is pigeons.

As a little boy he would raid neighborhood barns late at night and climb the raters after baby pigeons, which he would then take home and raise. One day a stray racing pigeon landed at the ranch and Steve caught it. This was the beginning of his obsession with the sport of racing pigeons, and that was 24 years ago.

In the last 2 years in the Camellia City Combine, Steve’s birds have won 17 first place with multi bird drops up to 12 birds. He as won 1st Red average speed, 1st green average speed, 1st overall average speed, 1st YB/OB average speed, champion loft of the year and champion bird of the year with a total of 384 diplomas.

In one loft races Steve’s birds have won 1st or equal 1st in the following races:

Reno One Loft
California Classic One Loft
Shasta Classic,
Winners Cup
Washington State Race
California State Race
Puget Sound Futurity
Gold Country Challenge
Silver Sate Classic
Delta Classic
Go For the Gold Futurity

On the national level, Steve was 2nd National Loft against 1684 lofts in 2008 and in 2009 he was 2nd National Loft against 1477 lofts. Steve has had several pigeons in the top 10% and in the National Ace pigeon awards in the last 2 years.

In the last couple years he has also taken top awards in his category in the Pigeon Digest awards. Steve’s dedication to the sport is recognized by his impressive race record and now he plans to dedicate his knowledge and experience with Pigeons to his Sierra Ranch Classic One Loft Race.
